Cross-bedding can be seen in the sandstone. Here, the sand layers do not lie horizontally one on top of the other, but at a certain angle. This type of structure is formed by the flow of wind or water during the deposition of sediment.  Above the Rotliegend sandstone lies the “Older Frankenberg Conglomerate,” a rounded, consolidated gravelly material. It serves as a so-called type locality, since it occurs here in its typical form and can therefore be used for comparisons with other sites. At the Eder Cliffs, the conglomerate interlays with marly and clayey rocks of the Zechstein (Upper Permian). The components of the “Battenberg Formation” originated as erosional debris that was eroded from the Variscan Mountains and transported into their foreland.
