The Eder is one of the most natural river landscapes in Germany and is also one of the cleanest rivers. With its gravel banks, rapids and alluvial forests, sections of it are reminiscent of uninfluenced wild rivers, which can only be found in a few regions in Germany. It has its source in the Rothaargebirge mountains and winds its way through the Rhenish Slate Mountains in sometimes sweeping river meanders.
Rivers and intact floodplains are important habitats in our landscape. They hold back floods and have a regulating effect on the excess nutrients that enter the watercourses from agricultural land. Unfortunately, the rivers have lost a lot of space due to straightening, dyke construction and bank stabilization.
This makes the river landscape in the Eder floodplains all the more unique. Migratory birds find resting places here, while ospreys and black storks feed here. In June, the surface of the water is covered with the flowers of the flooding buttercup. Preparations for the reintroduction of salmon and otters are in full swing.
