The “Rüthener Museumsstube” on Hachtorstraße in Rüthen was opened in May 2005 by the Heimatverein Rüthen e. V. in the renovated half-timbered annex of a former brewery. The gallery-style facility displays numerous different objects related to key themes in the history of the city and the Rüthen region across an exhibition area of approximately 100 square meters.

On October 13, 2019, the moment had finally arrived: The local history museum on Hachtorstraße was officially named after our association’s founder and is now called the Eberhard Henneböle Museum.

A half-timbered annex to a former brewery on Hachtorstraße displays numerous objects across approximately 100 square meters, organized around key themes in the history of the town and the Rüthen region. The Rüthen Heritage Society (Heimatverein Rüthen e. V.) displays exhibits from the carpenters’ and joiners’ guild, a collection of electrical appliances from the time when electricity first arrived in Rüthen, as well as rare minerals, fossils, and archaeological finds. A training room has been set up, featuring wooden church furnishings and paintings by the Rüthen-based church painter Walter Klemme. In addition, the entrance hall hosts a constantly changing exhibition covering various topics.

Who was Eberhard Henneböle?

There is probably no one else who has devoted himself so deeply to the history of Rüthen. In 1946, he founded the Rüthen Local History Association. Originally, this association was supposed to be called the “Heimatbund Rüthen.” This meant that not only Rüthen itself but also the villages in the Rüthen district were to be part of the association. Unfortunately, this did not work out, and we, too, tried unsuccessfully to do the same 50 years later.

Nevertheless, the Rüthen Local History Association now has more than 275 members, and Eberhard Henneböhle would surely be proud that his initiative has grown into such a strong association. Even before World War II, Henneböhle had been collecting unique historical artifacts with the intention of establishing a museum later on. It wasn’t until 2006 that we were able to carry out this plan. Unfortunately, a large portion of the exhibits in this collection had gone missing.

Some of these exhibits can be found today in the museum’s entrance area, and we have also displayed Henneböhle’s archaeological finds in display cases. We have also put Henneböle’s original writing and work materials on display. He made a name for himself through his numerous articles and publications on the history of Rüthen and shed light on the town of Rüthen in his writings.
