Since the turn of the millennium, the wire trees have been a part of the Lenne Promenade and are a defining feature of Altena’s cityscape, especially during the Christmas season. With their delicate branches, they are among the city’s most extraordinary wire sculptures and, at the same time, tell us a great deal about Altena.

After all, hardly anything symbolizes the “Castle and Wire City” as much as the connection between wire and nature. The development of Altena’s wire industry would not have been possible without the region’s natural resources: iron ore, the hydropower of the Lenne River, and the forests of the Sauerland provided the essential conditions for the processing and production of wire.

The “wire trees” take up this connection in a special way: they link a material that has shaped Altena for centuries with the nature that still surrounds the city today.

A Piece of Altena to Take Home

As a special souvenir or small gift, they serve as a reminder of Altena’s history and the close connection between wire and nature.

The miniature wire trees are available in the shop at the Erlebnisaufzug.
