The Liebfrauenkirche is one of the oldest Gothic churches in Germany. The foundation stone for this three-aisled hall church, modeled on St. Elisabeth's Church in Marburg and built in the Gothic style, was laid in 1286. Around 1380, the Marienkapelle was added as a place of pilgrimage, the altar inside was designed by Tyle von Frankenberg, as was the rich figurative decoration outside. Figures from this decoration are still preserved in the choir of the Liebfrauenkirche and in the museum in Frankenberg Monastery. Inside the church, the stained glass windows (14th century) depicting the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus catch the eye. Also worth seeing are the sacrament house and the stone pulpit from 1554 and the ceiling paintings, which were added after the great fire of 1476 and uncovered in 1962. The organ is a three-manual instrument with 43 stops and 3000 pipes.
The church is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 7 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 7 pm. In the winter months, the church is locked at nightfall.
