Brandiger Berg Nature Reserve

On the southwestern slope of the Enkenberg, west of Beringhausen, extensive forests meet structurally diverse grasslands. The Brandiger Berg Nature Reserve is characterized primarily by red beech forests, in which traces of the former coppicing system can still be seen in many places. Interspersed among them are spruce stands, small areas of old-growth forest, as well as rocks, rocky outcrops, and former quarries.

Properties:
The interplay between forest and open grassland is particularly charming: hedges, solitary trees, clusters of trees, and field copses break up the Weides and pastures. In addition to intensively farmed areas, there are also species-rich nutrient-poor pastures and smooth oatgrass meadows. Typical mosses and ferns grow on the rocks, while the diverse flora includes woodruff, wild garlic, liverwort, meadow primrose, and broad-leaved thyme, among others. Yellowhammers and red-backed shrikes also find suitable habitats here.
The Brandige Berg is part of the Diemel and Hoppecke Water System FFH area and has been part of the Diemel and Hoppecke Valley Bird Sanctuary, along with the adjacent forests, since 2023.
