In 1761, a battle took place along the Lippe River from Vellinghausen to Werl. By the standards of the time, it was of enormous proportions. In the “Battle of Vellinghausen,” 140,000 French soldiers faced off against 70,000 Allied soldiers from England, Brunswick, Hessen, and Hanover.
The monument was erected in 1911 during the reign of Emperor Wilhelm II. It features a bronze relief of Friedrich von Braunschweig, who led the Allied troops to Siegen at that time. The 210,000 soldiers left behind a scene of utter chaos. They even took the seeds intended for the next year’s harvest from the rural population. As a result, about 100 local residents starved to death in the year following the battle.
