The observation tower was built between 1928 and 1930 on the site of the former Müller farmstead (360 m above sea level) in memory of those who fell in World War I. The structure, designed by architect Heinrich Verfuß of Neheim-Hüsten, consists of solid, exposed rubble stone masonry with a semicircular porch and two observation decks.
Memorial plaques honoring those who fell in World War I, as well as those who fell in World War II, are affixed to the rubble-stone walls surrounding the structure. Two fire pits are also situated on the perimeter walls at the entrance. From 1943 to 1945, the observation tower served as an anti-aircraft station to protect the Sorpe Dam.
In 1997, the tower complex was added to the city of Sundern’s list of historic monuments and underwent extensive renovation from 2001 to 2003.
Since 2003, the tower has been open to the public on weekends. During the week, the key can be borrowed from the Haus des Gastes (Hakenbrinkweg 19) for a deposit of 20 euros. Climbing the tower itself is free of charge and at your own risk
. Twenty-three steps lead to the first floor of the observation tower. After another 22 steps, you’ll reach the first observation deck. Here you’ll find a telescope that you can use for free. A steel spiral staircase with 33 steps then leads to the top platform. The climb is well worth it, as the view of Sorpesee and the surrounding area is simply magnificent.
