144th Candlelight Concert
“Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach”
As part of the 144th Candlelight Concert, BWT – Brilon Kultour presents a Christmas gift for all music lovers. On December 29, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio I–III, BWV 248, will be performed at the Nikolaikirche in Brilon. Here, Bach places the compositional emphasis on the lyrical and contemplative; the Gospels according to Matthew and Luke serve as the textual basis. In the spirit of musical rhetoric and based on Baroque affect theory, Bach interweaves text and music in the Christmas Oratorio. The character of the piece is shaped by its musical form, tempo, dynamics, keys, rhythmic structure, and instrumentation. Under the direction of Susanne Lamotte, the program will feature the Brilon-based ensemble sine Nomine, the Neuss Chamber Orchestra, and four vocal soloists.
