The history of Alme is closely connected with the history of noble families in Alme. The current owner of the castle is the von Spee family, headed by Wilhelm Count von Spee. In 1912 Franz Reichsgraf von Spee acquired the Alme estate from the Counts of Bocholtz.
The castle built in the 1st half of the 18th century, is a three-winged building complex, with the side wings enclosing a courtyard open to the north. The two-story castle rises above a high basement, the considerable height of which can be seen on the outside staircase.
Around 1600, two houses existed on the site of today's Niederalme House, the old and the new Niederalme House, both inhabited by members of the von Meschede family, namely Mordian and Philipp. In the course of regularly occurring inheritance disputes it was now documented that both houses were separated by a 9 feet (2.83 m) high wall.
It is not possible to visit the castle, but it is possible to look at it from the street and the Sleeping Beauty Path.
Sleeping Beauty Trail - Wasserschloss Alme - Lambach Pump. A part of the hiking trail Al2 leads from the duck barn along the mill ditch to the cozy restaurant "Almer Schlossmühle" from there along the castle wall to the romantic Sleeping Beauty Trail along the castle pond with a view of the inner courtyard of the Almer Wasserschloss from the first half of the 18th century(A visit is not possible).
Here you can walk along the Sleeping Beauty Path on a flat path. Alternatively, a path winds its way uphill through mixed woodland to the Beerenscheid with a magnificent view of the Alme and Bleiwäsche.
From here it goes downhill to the starting point of the short hike. Especially for those interested in technology, it is worthwhile to take a look at the industrial monument Lambachpumpe at the corner of Schloßstraße/Wünnenberger Straße (B480).
