In 1019 the foundation stone of the first Magnus Church was laid and in 1040 or 1046 it was consecrated as St. Magnus Church. It belonged to the Corvey monastery. The old church was demolished in September 1852 and in 1853 the foundation stone was laid in the tower base. The neo-Gothic hall church with a choir closed on three sides was built of ashlar masonry from 1853 to 1856.
