More than 700 years ago, the foundation stone was laid for Schwarzenberg Castle, which is still considered a landmark of the town of Plettenberg. Since a devastating fire in 1864, only the foundation walls of the fortified and residential building remain. Previously, the bailiffs living at Schwarzenberg Castle determined the fate of the region for several centuries before the castle became the property of the von Plettenberg family in 1661 and slowly fell into disrepair, robbed of its former importance. A hike to the Schwarzenberg castle ruins is a must for every visitor to the four-valley town. The ruin with its impressive walls is an adventure in any weather and a worthwhile destination for an excursion.
Today, parts of the bakehouse, the foundation walls of the Drostenhaus, a round ascent and remains of the 13 m high keep as well as the 26 m deep well are still preserved from Schwarzenberg Castle. A still visible sign of the activities at the Schwarzenberg castle ruins is the Wartturm. It was rebuilt in 1983-87 by the local history group according to old contemporary depictions of Schwarzenberg Castle on the still existing foundations.
