The Nikolaikirche is a building of the early Gothic period and offers so many subtleties and treasures that only a general overview can be given here.
It was built in the period from 1229 to 1247.
It has been preserved in its original state except for the tower and the staircase.
This pearl of the early Gothic, as it is also called in art history, clearly shows the beginning of the construction in the east with its transitional forms of Romanesque and Gothic and then lets the forms of the Gothic emerge more and more clearly.
The smoothly ending chancel, the two bays high hall church and the polygonal tower part together form the church interior. The south side is at the same time the visible side and is therefore more splendidly designed in many details than the north side. The southern portal is outstanding, showing all the characteristics of the transitional style. St. Nicholas, the patron saint of citizens and merchants, is enthroned in the tympanum.
Overall, the church was built in the transitional and early Gothic style, both inside and out. Artfully designed individual forms and balanced spatial relationships form a rarely achieved artistic unity here, which stems from the faith of the time and still serves to glorify God in a special way today.
