In 1820, the "Old Cemetery" was established on the Twiete in Freienohl. The chapel standing there was originally located in the Rümmecke.
The chapel in the Rümmecke was built by the then electoral hunter Philipp Holzapfel - the mayor of Freienohl - together with his wife in 1707.
Presumably it stood at the place where the Rümmecke brook flows into the Ruhr. It cannot be ruled out that a watchtower or a similar structure had previously stood on this spot
The chapel passed into the possession of the municipality in 1846, which moved it to the cemetery.
