The village Leitmar carries a water name of high age, because the place name "Letmere" was formed with the Germanic basic word "mari" (for spring, swamp, standing water). As "villa Letmere" Leitmar is mentioned for the first time around 1120 as a donation of a noble lord Bernhard to the Benedictine abbey Helmarshausen (district Kassel).

The town's coat of arms, with its depiction of the Electorate of Cologne's cross, is a reminder of the town's long affiliation with the Electorate of Cologne. The ear of corn refers to the importance of agriculture, the hammer and mallet to the ore deposits in the area. St. Sturmius is the patron saint of the Catholic parish.
The village lies on the edge of the Diemelsee Nature Park.
Club life shapes and forms local community life. The Leitmar folk dance group is unique in the town area. Founded in 1984, it is known far beyond the borders.

In Leitmar there is a shooting range with a shooting cinema belonging to the Military and Police Shooters Association.
