Housed on three floors in one of the city's most beautiful baroque buildings, the Iserlohn City Museum presents nearly 400 million years of geography and urban history.
Changing special exhibitions on the cultural history of the city and the region as well as a wide range of educational offerings make the museum a cultural meeting place and discussion venue for urban history.

The prehistory and early history of the region range from the coral reefs that developed during the Devonian period in what is now the town, to fossils of ancient sea creatures, to the tools used by the first people who lived in Iserlohn 70,000 years ago.
The town was founded in the Middle Ages, and the production of wire and chain mail also began when the town was granted its charter. The wire, needle and brass industries that developed from this shaped Iserlohn and the lives of its inhabitants - both in factory and home work.
In the 19th century, numerous clubs were founded in the town and new political ideas were discussed in the pubs.
In 1849, Prussian troops put down an uprising of Iserlohn citizens that had begun with the storming of the armory - today's city museum.
The National Socialist terror and the Second World War also left their mark on the town.
The nearby air-raid shelter Altstadt, built from 1943 onwards, is maintained by the museum and can be visited as part of a guided tour.
