The Biggetalsperre was built in the 1960s just outside the town of Attendorn. Its main purpose is to store or release water as needed, thus ensuring a steady flow of water in the Ruhr. From the reservoir, up to 40 percent of the required supplementary water of all dams can be released into the Ruhr river system via the Bigge and Lenne rivers.

But how does it all work? What happens in the event of flooding? Guests will learn this and much more during a guided tour around the Biggedamm. At the beginning, visitors are shown a short information film in the visitor pavilion below the lighthouse. Afterwards, a tour guide then provides insights into the structures and their function and explains the highly complex technical processes in a clear and understandable way.
