#deinsauerland / Neusta POIs / Large pond Soest

Originally, the Great Pond was a spring swamp. It was not until the 12th century that the water began to be artificially dammed to form a pond. It was first mentioned as "grote dyke" in the 14th century. Six springs are still known to exist today. The spring activity and the almost constant temperature of the emerging water ensure that the pond does not freeze over in winter.

Diagonally opposite the pond mill, on the other side of the pond, is a replica of the "seesaw". This is a medieval instrument of punishment painted in the disgraceful color yellow. Until the end of the 18th century, the seesaw was used in Soest to punish minor offenses such as theft from fields or gardens. According to reports, no one was physically harmed by this disgraceful punishment.

In 1995, the Soest town marksmen resumed the tradition of seesawing as a prelude to their marksmen's festival. However, it is no longer real wrongdoers who are rocked, but representatives of local celebrities. The former disgrace has now become an honorary punishment, so to speak, but hundreds of onlookers still attend the event every year.
