For narrative prose from the city of Lippstadt
The series of winners of the "Thomas Valentin Literature Prize", which the city of Lippstadt awards every four years, is impressive: Markus Werner (1993), Ilija Trojanow (1997), Angela Krauß (2001), Ulrich Woelk (2005), Karl-Heinz Ott (2009), Jenny Erpenbeck (2013), Max Blaeulich (2017) and Christoph Peters (2021). In all cases, novels were honored.
In order to give this prize a greater, supra-regional status, we have decided to make a far-reaching change: Among the almost 900 (!) literary prizes in Germany, not a single one is dedicated exclusively to volumes of shorter narrative prose. While short stories enjoy the highest esteem in other countries, they are wallflowers in the German-speaking world. And so from now on, the Thomas Valentin Prize will be dedicated to these shorter genres, whatever you want to call them - with twice the prize money of 10,000 euros.
