1934 in the city's largest and most famous theater: Lucille Wiley, director of the opera company, is preparing for the once-in-a-lifetime event of welcoming the world-class soprano Elena Firenzi for a guest performance of "Carmen". But Elena arrives far too late, feeling unwell, and then her husband Pasquale disappears after a passionate jealousy scene. When Elena is found seemingly lifeless in bed thanks to an overdose of sleeping pills, it is up to the inconspicuous assistant Jo to save the evening and slip into the role of the opera star, because one thing is certain: "Carmen" must not be allowed to burst.
But as soon as Jo alias Elena alias Carmen is on stage, the real Firenzi wakes up and wants to go on stage... and when Jo's fiancé and a real Dutch heroic tenor are also up for amorous adventures, the confusion is perfect.
Here the ladies take over the direction, making the play seem fresher and more charming than ever. An incredibly funny and crazy screwball comedy.
The Ohnsorg Theater has existed since 1902, but it wasn't until television began broadcasting the Low German plays with Heidi Kabel, Henry Vahl, Otto Lüthje and others in the 1960s and 1970s that the Hamburg theater became known nationwide.
